Hiring Gains Stronger than Expected in February

U.S. employers added a staggering 678,000 new jobs in February, according to the latest employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists expected gains of 400,000 new jobs last month, according to a Reuters survey.

The unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, down from 4 percent in January, and the number of unemployed individuals edged down to 6.3 million. In February 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, and the number of unemployed individuals was 5.7 million.

In addition, 13.0 percent of employed people teleworked last month, primarily because of the coronavirus pandemic, down from 15.4 percent in January.
