Surge in US Job Openings Reaches Highest Level Since November

In May 2025, US job openings surged unexpectedly by 374,000 from April, reaching nearly 7.8 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This marks the highest level since November 2024. The accommodation and food services sector saw the largest increase with 314,000 new openings, followed by finance and insurance with 91,000. However, job openings in the federal government decreased by 39,000. Compared to a year ago, job openings were down by 132,000. Additionally, hires decreased by 112,000 to 5.5 million, while quits rose by 78,000 to approximately 3.2 million. Layoffs and discharges fell by 188,000 to around 1.6 million.
